Good morning, from Santa Fe, New Mexico!

Just a quick update, as we are getting ready to head out. Yesterday was a full 18-hour day of driving, from Memphis to Santa Fe. We drove over 1,000 miles. And we started the day with an uh-oh moment: we were driving through the center of Memphis I realized that Eric was about to run a stop sign. I raised the alarm, and he hit the brakes, but a bit too late…and there at the crossroads was a police car, waiting to making a turn. I think we pulled over before the flashing lights even turned on.

The police officer approached, Eric handed her his license and the car registration, and apologized, saying that he had not seen it, and that I had pointed it out. The officer said, “I saw that,” with almost a smile. She was very nice and let us go with a warning to slow down. Phew.

From the highway, Arkansas seemed very pretty, and if we had more time I would have liked to explore the Ozarks. Pretty much all we did was stop for peaches at a roadside fruit stand.

Oklahoma … we really tried to find something to do briefly in Oklahoma that would allow us to experience a bit of the state. But really, we were pretty much reduced to stopping at Cherokee Trading Post, the Sooner State’s version of South of the Border.

Texas was gorgeous as we drove along highway 40, except for Amarillo, which has a rather pungent aroma due to the stockyards that line the highway. We relied on Roadside America to tell us where to eat: we stopped at the Big Texan, which offers a free 72 oz. steak dinner if you can eat it in an hour. We didn’t even try, and neither did anyone else in the restaurant.

It was dark when we got into New Mexico, so all I’ve seen so far is the inside of the hotel room, so I’m going to wrap this up. We’ll update again when we can.
